Everyone has heard the phrase that music soothes the savage beast. Well, it does a pretty good job on the human one as well.  Man has learned that music can make a big difference to how they are feeling and how a bad day can be transformed into a better one. But how we listen to this music makes all the difference. When we are feeling angry and decide to listen to some music what we choose makes the difference between helping us feel better and spurring our anger on. Sometimes a light piece may only anger a person more because it is so completely opposite to how they feel at the moment. Often what works best is music that suits the mood. If you are angry then music that speaks to those feelings may work better at helping to dispel the bad feelings. Then as your music session continues you can choose music that flows through the spectrum of emotions until it becomes calming. That has a much better opportunity to help to diminish the anger and make you feel better.

Music can heal best when you are receptive to it. That means that if you stand at attention and only vaguely listen to the music or treat it like it is nothing more than the background it will not help you at all. But, if instead you are sitting there comfortably in your favorite place in the room with your stereo on, take off your shoes and kick back. That will help the music to help you. Then do not do anything else at first. Let the music be all that there is. Let it be absorbed. Breathe easy and release the tension.

Do not use headphones. Use your stereo and its speakers. This allows the music to flow throughout your space. Many people believe that allowing the whole self to listen to the music instead of just the ears speeds up the healing process.

Once the music starts to get to you more the thing to do is to let it take hold of you. If it makes you want to dance, then dance. If it puts you to sleep, than that is what you needed. Whatever emotions or demands you feel of the music let yourself go with it. Many people feel that music energizes them after a hard day. Allow that to happen to you. You want your music to heal your soul, to heal whatever it is that is bothering you that day.

Some people use music to help them meditate. This brings them to a relaxed state where they can better cope with the issues of the day.  Usually the music in this case is played as a background, something that allows the person the ability to slip into a completely relaxed state. Different music works for different people but something calming, like ocean sounds, is often used.

As well, music therapy is a recognized treatment process whereby a trained therapist uses music to heal a person physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. The music is used as a basis to improve the patient’s overall well being. In an average session the music can be listened to, played or sung or danced to. The music is chosen based on the goals of the therapist in treating the patient. Music affects mood as much as it affects behavior. Therefore the music is chosen carefully based on what the patient’s needs are in their treatment sessions. These healing sessions have great success with people of all ages, genders and socio-economic levels.
