Smart Advice for New Baseball Parents when Purchasing Equipment
Playing baseball is the right of passage for many children. But sometimes, when kids start a new baseball career, parents can be left with a big hole in their pockets. It doesn't have to be that way. Remember that the goal is to get the best value and comfortable equipment possible. But the reality is that the child will probably outgrow all of the equipment that is bought in no time. So what's a conscientious baseball parent to do?
Don't be too cheap when choosing equipment for a child's introduction to baseball. If the kid is going to put the time in and is brave enough to try, make sure that bad equipment does not hinder performance. Failing at sports can be pretty hard on children. If they don't excel at baseball, let it be because they are not made to play it; not because the are using a hand-me-down glove that is too big.
With that said, there is no reason to mortgage the house because little Jimmy is joining the baseball team. There are many ways to save money when buying equipment for little leaguers. Take advantage of the numerous discount companies that can be accessed through the Internet. That way deals can be found, and the bargains identified without being swayed by salespeople. Instead of driving from shop to shop, it will be possible to browse equipment at home.
A glove represents a kids first association with baseball. A glove that fits properly and is comfortable will start little leaguers off on the right foot. A glove that doesn't fit or is uncomfortable can make the initial exposure to baseball uncomfortable. The wrong glove will hinder ability, limit success and diminish the amount of success and fun had. It could spell an early end to a child's baseball experience.
The most important element of a first timer's glove is control. The child should be able to handle his glove without extreme movement. If the ball falls out of the glove because he can't close the glove with his hand, its too big. Search for a malleable glove.
It is also just as important to find the right bat. Pay attention to the weight and length of the bat. First determine what type of ball is being played, such as tee ball, Youth Baseball, Senior League Baseball, High School baseball and College Baseball. These all have different bats. Try to get the lightest bat of a particular length that will fit into your budget. The lightest bats will be more costly. Cheaper bats made from aluminum that costs less will weigh more. If you child cannot hold the bat out to his side for twenty seconds, the bat is too heavy.
Word of mouth is one of the major ways information travels. Networking with other parents that have bought equipment for their kids can be very helpful. They might have tips about mom and pop establishments that are tucked away in the corners of your town.
Talk to your child's coach. Odds are that the coach has either been in charge of other teams, or has a child playing as well. They would be able to offer some useful information on the subject. This is an especially good avenue to travel if you are not as well schooled on little league baseball. It can help you avoid being taken for a ride and losing a fair sum of money.
Maybe your kid’s team can get a group discount from some distributors on equipment. Check it out with the coach or access the www.littleleague.org for more information. This is a great site to get advice and tips on how to manage your children's baseball experience. It also provides a way to find out what other parents are doing around the country. You can also find out the range of prices on different equipment by checking out a price comparison website. They will line of a number of distributors along side one another.
It doesn't matter if it is time to purchase a kids very first glove or exchange an outgrown one for something that fits. There are important factors to consider that can have a big impact on the player's achievement, accomplishments and last but not least, enjoyment.
